  After some more googling I gave the oldest trick in the book another try. The piece of business card really needs to be wedged tight behind the SIM card - and presto! Back online.

  Doesn't make sense though, I remember there being a different, "insert SIM card" warning. If it complains about the registration, I'd assumed it has contact to the SIM.
